It has been nearly four months since Apple released iTunes 11 with its ‘dramatically simplified user interface’ that was meant to change users’ lives and make us all billionaires. OK, so perhaps iTunes 11 wasn’t quite that hyped. Although Apple is certainly proud of its new mini player, ‘Next Up’ interface, and album view, some iTunes users simply miss the old version and want to roll back.
If the above description fits you, you’re not alone. I often hear from Ars readers wondering how to get back to a previous version. Luckily, it’s not too tough to downgrade from iTunes 11 back to iTunes 10.7 (the last version to be released to the public) — as long as you’re willing to use a little elbow grease. To be clear, most of us here at Ars are fine with iTunes 11, but we sympathize with those who just want to go back to the way things were. So if you’re one of those people who is tired of iTunes 11 after four months and you’re ready to go back, read on.
What you need
- Some kind of backup of your iTunes library
- A copy of iTunes 10.7 (which you can download directly from Apple)
- AppZapper for completely removing all traces of iTunes 11
- Pacifist for replacing existing iTunes 11 files with iTunes 10.7 files
Performing the downgrade dance
First, we highly recommend that you perform a fresh backup of your Mac before starting this process. Although it’s not particularly ‘dangerous,’ it’s always a good idea to have a recent backup in the event that you do something wonky and need to roll back. Go ahead and do it. We’ll wait.
While you’re waiting for the backup to finish, make sure you have all the relevant apps (linked above) downloaded and ready to go. Drag AppZapper and Pacifist to your Applications folder. If you’re using the demo of AppZapper, it should work fine, but there’s a five ‘zap’ limit before you’re required to shell out the $12.95 purchase price. Many Mac users think AppZapper is well worth the money, so if you find yourself uninstalling things often, seriously consider supporting this great app by buying a full version.
Once your backup is finished, go ahead and launch AppZapper. (Make sure you don’t have iTunes open, either.) The default screen is a pretty simple drag-and-drop screen, but if you want to see all the apps in your Applications folder, there’s a slider in the upper right-hand corner to show them.
Select or drag iTunes onto AppZapper. If you see a message saying iTunes was created by Apple and can’t be zapped, click the button that takes you to the AppZapper preferences. From here, uncheck ‘Keep Apple applications safe’ and close the window, then try again.
Once you do this, AppZapper will display a list of files that it will delete from your system. This is the moment of truth — do you really want to downgrade? If so, click the ‘Zap’ button; you’ll have to enter your admin password, and then the program will ‘zap’ iTunes 11 off your Mac.
Congratulations, you’re iTunes-free! What’s that you say? You still need something to manage your music library and sync with your iOS device? Yeah, we thought so. Now it’s time to open up Pacifist — this is a shareware application that allows you to use it for free but encourages you to pay $20 if you find it useful. Drag the iTunes 10.7 DMG file to the Pacifist window — this will show you a list of files inside the DMG along with their file size, owner, and permissions. Mac os x 10.6 installer dmg.
If the lock icon in the upper right says ‘Not Authorized,’ click it and enter your admin password. Then click on the iTunes 10.7 DMG in the file list and click the ‘Install’ button on the upper left. Check the ‘Use Administrator Privileges’ box and then click ‘Install.’
From here, Pacifist may ask you whether you want to replace certain files, like so:
When it comes to iTunes, it’s OK to click the ‘Don’t ask again for this installation’ checkbox and replace the files.
There are some other tutorials floating around the Web that have you restoring your library from an older backup at this point, but I tried this method multiple times and found that I didn’t have to do so. I was able to launch iTunes 10.7, agree to the licensing agreement, and go straight into the app with all my playlists and music already in place. Still, if you feel like your library is behaving oddly, you may want to do this — you did keep those backups from before iTunes 11, right? — though as of this writing, it doesn’t look like that’s necessary.
You also have the option of going into the backup you just made at the beginning of this tutorial and going into your home folder > Music > iTunes folder to find ‘Previous iTunes Libraries.’ From there, you can grab your most recent old library and copy it back into the iTunes folder, deleting ‘iTunes Library.itl’ and replacing it with the one you’re moving. Rename the file to ‘iTunes Library.itl’ and it should function — I tried this method several times as well and was not met with any errors.

The only person who can answer the above question is you. It’s safe to say that Apple isn’t planning to turn back many of the changes made to iTunes in version 11, so if you see a feature added to iTunes sometime in the future, you’ll have no choice but to upgrade if you want to use it. But if you’re downgrading because of bugs in the current version of iTunes (11.0.2 as of this writing), then you may be able to upgrade again sometime in the future if you feel confident that the most irksome bugs have been squashed.
